Spotlight: Outloved

Finding new music to listen to can be really challenging. So often I listen to a band and the first instinct is to run for the hills and avoid avoid avoid. But something that is happening a lot more frequently in Australia is bands delivering high quality music. For Gippsland’s ’Outloved’ on their new song ‘Blind & Failing’ they’ve put out a song that really surprised and impressed me.

Early on you might pick up on a vibe reminiscent of ‘The Comfort’ with that slow paced post rock tempo and really well balanced vocals. For a band who are only releasing their second single after 2019s ‘Dying to Leave’ they’ve done an outstanding job.

The start of the song really hits hard with that opening riff which builds into a really well written verse and chorus that I’m happy to say is one of the better hooks of 2020 so far. The art of hook writing can not be understated at any level of music and when a band on this level delivers something as good as this I can’t help but smile. It’s only March but this chorus is as good as any I’ve heard so far in 2020….And Enter Shikari have released two tracks, so big wraps and props too Outloved. Maybe I should take that back Rou Reynolds is king.

Did someone say Deadlights when the singer comes in with the screams mid song? The balanced production (Ionei Heckenberg Ocean Sleeper) is a real highlight throughout the track as every member gets a chance to showcase their talent. I absolutely love the lead break on guitar coming out of the bridge and the double kicks underneath the final chorus along with the dramatic pause. Little things like that just fill out a song so well if they are done correctly and put in the right moments. They ticked all the boxes on this one for me there.

Both singles have been dropped through Dreambound and with a further 4 new songs ready to come on their EP slated for release mid 2020 I’m excited about the potential these guys have shown particularly on this track.
